Sega Genesis ~ Crusader of Centy Review

Overview

Crusader of Centy is a real time action role-playing game where you play a fourteen year old boy whose destiny is to change the past, present and future. You start off being given your father's sword to train as a defender of your village against invading monsters but as you travel around and help people you eventually get sent back in time and stop monsters from ever meeting humans altering history forever.

Gameplay & Interface 8/10
Gameplay in Crusader of Centy is in my opinion very unique. You start off only able to swing a sword, afraid to even jump and eventually you get animal and monster helpers to enhance yourself somehow. For example, if you use a lion as one of the helpers your sword will become a flaming sword of fire when you throw it. For other animals, they may have other uses like acting as a platform for you to jump upon. Even better, certain animals when used with other animals can make their power or effect greater. For example, using the lion and penguin together produces the most powerful magical flying ice sword.

Sometimes however, they become too annoying to use, since you can only have two animals active at anytime, you have to switch to and fro by accessing the menu. Which means in the heat of battle you may be using a combination of four animals but since you can only use two at a time switch them around every five seconds or so.

Storyline 3.5/5
The story of Crusader of Centy goes something like this: You have just turned fourteen and like all other fourteen year olds have to begin training to protect the village. When you talk to the fortune teller however you are told you can now only speak to animals and plants no longer to other humans. As you continue on your journeys (and whacking quite a few evil monsters) and help animals in distress you come across an interesting phenomenon much like a twister. Upon investigation you get sucked up and thrown back in time. Each time you alter the past slightly and each time you return to the present and move to a new location getting thrown further back in time until you return to the time when monsters first appeared in the world right at the end of the game. Re-opening the portal to the monsters' homeworld you completely alter history and so no longer do people fight nor use weapons since the threat of monsters does not exist.

Personally, I think the storyline is innovative and frankly I'm surprised because Crusader of Centy looks very much like a childish game but has a very unique plot. Only downside to the storyline in Crusader of Centy is that sometimes it is too cryptic and you find yourself wondering what to do and it just seems that moving on to the next location will usually get the story moving which in fact it usually does.

Graphics 5/5
I believe that Crusader of Centy has the best "cartoon" graphics for any cartoon RPG game. Not only because it looks very convincing but also because the frame rate at which you and enemies move is very suited to the game, fast yet not "sonic" speed (unless you are enhanced by a cheetah animal).

Level design 3/5
As for the areas and levels, they are quite interesting and unique with places like an ice palace, a cave with flowing lava and a desert. However, the locations seem too exotic for their own good. Almost all the areas are located on a single island, giving it a surreal feeling like the producers are not placing enough emphasis on realism.

Music & Sound 4/5
This is quite good but not "heroic" sounding more like you are going on a school excursion then undertaking a quest or "crusade". Even at the end it does not really evoke tension or much excitement. Other then that it is quite good and even cute in certain areas.

For-Unique animal enhancement and animal combo system. Great graphics. Unique story.

Against-Storyline does not flow, often cryptic as to where to go. Sound not too exciting. Terrains somewhat surreal.
