Sega Genesis ~  Gods Review

Overview

Gods looks to be quite a standard platformer, but for some strange reasons, it's considered as a classic among many. Lets find out why.

Gameplay

The objective of the game is to make it through to the end of a level set over 4 different worlds. All the worlds are set at the ancient time of the Romans and Greeks as the title "Gods" suggests. I'm not really sure where exactly, but it would have to be in either Italy or Greece. When you come to the end of the world, you must overcome a titanic big boss that's exponentially bigger than you of course. Along the way, you will face all sorts of ugly monsters that must be killed to make your way. All the weapons you obtain are missile weapons or just shooting ones. You start off with pathetic little knifes, but as you progress, you will upgrade to meaner fire power, such as humugous axes and bulging fireballs. You also have to collect stuff like diamonds and pots for credits, which are used for buying weapons and health at the shops.

What makes this game even more challenging, is how your movements are restricted. The jumps you make are realistically small and you can't fire while ducking. Unlike most other platofrm games, you can't ridiculously change direction in mid air.

Graphics

As the whole game is set in the BC times of the Romans and Greeks, the game obviously looks like it and does a great job of it. All the colours have been used to maximum effect without going overboard on too many colours. Most of the time, you'll be seeing the browns and greys. The frame rate is super smooth, and it looks and feels nice killing those monsters.

It looks so awesome when you die!

Sound and Music

The music is pretty pulsating and it feels so right while you're madly firing your weapons. However, it does sound weak and the Genesis is more capable than that.

The sound effects are very average, and alot of them are ridiculous.

The walking sound effects are like Transformers trudging around. And when your weapons fire into stone walls, they sound like wimpy little pins hitting them.

Once again, the Genesis is much more capable than that!

Game Design

The levels in Gods are set to be challenging, and later an element of puzzle solving comes in to get past them instead on just going to the end. Such as finding certain keys to open certain doors or finding secret passages.

Longetivity

This game is going to take you many days to complete and to make things easier for you, you can save your game after every world with passwords. Disappointingly, you are in control of only one character, and once you do happen to complete the game, there's little point in coming back for more.

2.5 out of 5

For: Excellent framerate, challenging levels, lots of weapons to experiment with, pulsating ancient BC music

Against: After you complete the game, you're pretty much done for, no other characters to choose from, some silly sound effects.

So we come to this conclusion, why was Gods such a classic game classed among many?

Well, Gods looks like a decent standard platformer. Nothing too special. Maybe that's why.
