Sega Genesis ~ Mutant League Football Review |
Overview Mutant League Football is like an overkill action game tied in with the tactical elements of gridiron football. Gameplay Primarily the aim of the game is to win your football matches to score as many points possible, but instead the alternative way to win games is to entirely demolish the opposition making it instantly fun. As the title suggests, this game has mutants, monsters, aliens or whatever you all them rather than humans. During the games, a screen comes up with all your attacking or defence options. This includes these animating boxes illustrating the game plan. I actually found this part of the game quite complicated seeing I knew nothing about gridiron football. So I figured if you can't run the plays, then you might as well play the game ugly by just killing the opposition till the end, but don't forget that they like to get ugly as much as you do! This game is actually better for people with knowledge of grid iron football, it still manages to let people who don't know anything about grid iron football play the ugly way, although not properly as it should be played. 7.5 out of 10 Graphics I found the size of the players to be a bit too large and the view of the pitch too limited. This makes it very difficult to know what is going on as an overall picture of your games when you can only see something like 10% of the pitch. The animation itself manages to make the game look quick and funny, especially when players are trying to kill each other. 3 out of 5 Sound and Music The music nicely fits in with the game, but I found it rather irritating to listen to. The sound effects are very entertaining with strange monster grunts, crowd noises and even aliens yapping their alien language. 3 out of 5 Playability and Versatility I found this game to be very annoying when all the plays you attempt to run are far too short lived returning you to the play options screen. The game just goes stop and start the whole way. What really gets to me is if this game was intended for overkill violence, which I think it is, then why did EA stuff in so much of this tactical grid iron crap that for the most part hardly go according to plan with all these stop and starts. It would have been better if you could just turn all the rules off to cater for people who know nothing about gridiron football like me. 2 out of 5 Options There 3 modes of play including single match, playoffs with saving included and practice, all along with an abundance of teams for you to pick. I think this is a bit limited, because if this game was meant to be a violent sports game, there should have been modes to highlight this. There are 5 levels of difficulty giving you a good learning curve. 3.5 out of 5 For: fun to kill during games, mutants, quick and funny animations, entertaining sound effects, lots of difficulty levels. Against: helps to have a knowledge of grid iron football, large players, limited field view, irritating music, not many play modes, too much stop and start. |
