Super Nintendo - Secret Of Evermore Review |
Secret of Evermore was developed by Squaresoft USA and never really received much recognition. The story revolves around a young boy and his dog and plays a lot like Secret of Mana but has a few innovations of its own. Gamplay and Interface: 7/10 The gameplay is quite okay, and the Artificial Intelligence controlling your partner is quite accurate) but there are times when the charging goes to waste when you fire because the enemies are too fast moving or just out of range. The actual acccessing of spells and status screens is very smooth, pleasant looking and unconfusing. The alchemy system is rather annoying at times because you have to keep using the spells for them to level up rather than gain experience. Storyline: 2.5/5 The storyline goes something like this. Years ago, a scientist invented a machine which allowed humans to live in a place of their creation for some time. The experiment went wrong and the people and the scientists became trapped in the world of Evermore where all these places exist. In present day Podunk, you the hero, get sucked into the world of Evermore and must discover its secret to get home. This story has a rather retro feel to it but it serves the game nicely allowing the game developers to tie the very different worlds together. Otherwise, there is little exploration of the characters personalities. Graphics 5/5 The graphics are very nice, outdoing most games. Most of the temples and statues look really good. There are some ugly looking graphics which are a bit too dark but it adds to the depressive nature of certain areas. Level design: 3/5 The levels for most part are well-laid out but there are really annoying maze areas where you can spend a good half an hour with no enemies just wandering around doing nothing but trying to find the exits or switches. This is especially true at the end of the game. Music and Sound: 2.5/5 The music is average and so are the sounds. They add little to the game.. For: Good graphics, excellent interface. Against: Annoying mazes, music and sounds. |
