Super Nintendo - Soul Blazer Review |
Soul Blazer is the first of a triology. The sequels are Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma respectively. In my opinion this is a classic RPG/action game. Gameplay and interface 8/10 Gameplay and interface is fairly simple. From a top down view you go around slashing bad guys and collecting the gems they leave. While this is not exactly innovative the sword slash covers enough room to make it fair and the speed of your character is just right to render it excellent. You have no combos nor any need for them in the game. To help you is revolving ball which can cast spells and if you have the right characters do a variety of other things. The options screen is easily accessible with the press of a button and you do not have to make tedious choices on what weapons or armour to use because they are only a few and they are arranged in order of strength and level. Storyline: 5/5 The storyline is quite original. A king makes a pact with a creature named Deathtoll who gives him a piece of gold for each living creature he gives. Of course, the world is soon decimated and you are sent down to revive it. Along the way you met people and animals who once revived will aid you in your journey. Eventually you resurrect the whole world and must face Deathtoll in space. I read somewhere that this was a lame story but frankly it seems like a good one to me. Graphics: 2.5/5 Admittedly the graphics aren't too good but it was average for its time and fits the whole atmosphere of the game. A simple game with simple but clear graphics. Level design: 5/5 The levels are logically designed and are easy to navigate most of the times, and you do feel like you are making progress each time you liberate people and creatures. Music and Sound: 5/5 The music is simplistic compared to other RPG's but is exciting and fitting which is why I gave it full marks. It matches the game very well. For: A neat little classic game where everything fits nicely. Easy to play. Against: Not mainstream enough for some. |

Looks blue and cold. Dress warm. |
That's the evil bad guy at the end. Use the phoenix on him to vanquish him. |
